Why did Jesus give us this teaching?
An Israeli smacks a Palestinian. By human nature, the Palestinian smacks the Israeli back. Then, the Israeli smacks the Palestinian. The Palestinian smacks the Israeli.
This facial abuse continues ad infinitum.

An Israeli smacks a Palestinian. The Palestinian turns the other cheek. Supposedly overcome with shock, the Israeli smiles, then gives the Palestinian a big hug.
The cycle of violence has ended.
I adhered to the “turn the other cheek” philosophy with relative success…until I began to interact with people from countries of the former “Evil Empire” (as President Ronald Reagan referred to the Communist bloc).
When you turn the other cheek with these little devils, they interpret your action as a sign of weakness. They continue to work their evil deeds unabated.
After the Israeli smacked the Palestinian, why did the Palestinian smack the Israeli? Answer: Because the Palestinian knew who dealt the smack.
